| Fasting Testimonials |
Tish - 6 daysHow long and when did you fast?6 days, January 2003 What is your age, gender, weight before your fast, and height? 47, female, 178 lbs., 5' 7 1/2" What was your weight after completing the fast? What is your weight now? 163 lbs. Why did you decide to fast? I really needed a total break from my life. I was stressed, unhappy and over-stimulated/saturated with food, caffeine and alcohol. Also, I had some major decisions to make about a job and where I was living. What was your biggest apprehension going into the fast? There was no real apprehension. I had fasted for 2 or 3 days once before. I was really looking forward to the break. Did you ever consider ending the fast during the process? Why and why did you continue or stop? I didn't consider ending it because it was so short. Did you accomplish what you set out to do with your fast? Yes, although my goals were vague, they became clearer as I fasted. Would you recommend that people have their fasts supervised? Why or why not? Absolutely. I found the support critical, not only from Robert as a physician, but also from my roommate and the other people fasting and interning. Why did you choose to fast at the Tanglewood Wellness Center? It had been recommended by a friend and the location was easily accessible by car. Also, the website was very helpful and gave me all the information needed to decide. What was your experience at the TWC like? The location is beautiful. The Center is light, clean and fresh - very restful. The professional staff are warm, supportive and they have many years of experience with both fasting and eating raw and live the lifestyle they promote. What did you experience during the fast? The physical discomfort was minimal. I had a slight headache the 2nd and 3rd days but other than that, the real challenge was emotional. I was restless and slightly bored, working through emotional petulance, resistance and childish stubbornness. What did you do all day? I slept a great deal the 1st couple of days, then rested, read, talked with other guests, went to the meditations. Just purified water? Did you get hungry? No. Initially I thought of coffee, but I was never hungry. Did you get weak? After day 5, I got a little light-headed if I stood up too quickly and felt a little weak. What was the best part of the process for you? The purifying of my mind and body. Although it was a brief stay, I feel much more serene. What was the most difficult part of the process for you? My emotional world. Food has always been my way of avoiding anything I didn't want to look at. It was my reward, my treat, my payoff and often my punishment. Without food, emotions would surface and I had to experience them and I found they weren't "fatal" or nearly as large and powerful as I feared they would be. Was it ever painful? No. Would you fast again? Yes. I hope to do a longer fast of 14-21 days, which would have been ideal this time. What piece of advice would you give to other fasters? There is nothing to fear. The process is very natural and progressive. It comes in waves. Additional comments: It was really helpful to see people in all stages of the "raw" or health journey, from Loren and Robert, the professionals, to the interns and their experiences to those of the other fasters, each of whom had a personal story that helped fill in my understanding of this journey we're all on.
